Friedrich Stowasser was born on December 15th, 1928 in Vienna. In 1936 he attended the Montessori School. Even there his uncommon imagination with colours and shapes was beginning to develop. In 1948/49 he was a student of Prof. Christian Andersen at the 'Akademie der Bildenden Künste' (College of arts) in Vienna. Since 1949 he has called himself 'Hundertwasser'.
His studies led him all around the world. He became acquainted with many different cultures, and of course he was influenced by them. His paintings continue the tradition of the so-called 'Wiener Jugendstil'. The picture 'Der wunderbare Fischfang' (The Fabulous Catch), a collaboration from Hundertwasser and Bro from the year 1950, can be regarded as a good example of that.
In his ecologically oriented papers he mainly opposes today's architecture. This was also the background of the origin of the 'Hundertwasser Haus'
